Starters, now this is the good bit, we all sit down together and tuck into a festive group meal. Tradition dictates we eat a prawn cocktail with brown bread, other options are available. When it comes to starters they should be quick and easy, often prepared on the day but elements can be put together in advance.
Prawn cocktails may be tradition but pâté is a great alternative. You can make it yourself, there are many recipes online but price-wise it’s just as cheap to buy your own and easier.

Shopping list for four: cocktail prawns, lettuce, black pepper, mayonnaise, tomato ketchup, cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice and salt.
- In a bowl fill with shredded lettuce leaves.
- In another bowl combine 5 tbsp mayonnaise, 4 tbsp ketchup, 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tbsp lemon juice, salt and pepper.
- Once you have the sauce mix in 400g cooked prawns and then spoon onto lettuce leaves.
- Dust the top off with cayenne pepper and enjoy.

Which way you choose to start your day is up to you, if you opt for the prawn cocktail the prawn mixture can made the day before and stored in the fridge. You can also pick up a loaf of brown bread and enjoy that with both dishes.
